Blackout poems are fun way to play with words when you are feeling a little uninspired or a little stuck or just want something a little different to do. What you come up with can be a bit esoteric, or staccato (or both), but it works in the form of a poem. I have a book that turned into craft paper awhile ago and keep random pages close at hand for when I’m bored or on hold on the telephone. I worked on this one while in a post-France haze of confusion. It wasn’t quite jet lag, but I’d been away so long that I needed a little while I get back into the groove of things. A blackout poem was just the thing to do something creative while my brain readjusted.
Give it a try sometime — you can use any printed page with words on it: a book, a magazine, a paper menu, anything. Feel free to share it back with me.
